We are overly excited to speak with the new artist we have decided to feature from hundreds of submissions. This time, we are having an incredibly special figure in film and television with us; someone who is responsible for so much of the magic onscreen we cannot even imagine how it exists. Angelina Vania Hadiputri is a compositor and New York based visual effects artist. We are extremely excited to ask about her work as she is one of the leading artists in her field.

NY Art Life:

Thank you so much for speaking with us, we are happy to chat with you. Tell us about yourself and how you define your work.

Angelina Hadiputri:

Thank you for having me, I am equally joyful to speak with you. I am a visual effects artist and an expert in compositing. I have worked on episodic television projects as well as critically acclaimed short film projects that dived into the theme of human condition. Being able to play a part in these projects is incredibly special, as it completes the experience for viewers.

NY Art Life:

That is amazing, what a fantastic way to put it. So, how did you find your way into TV and film? Was it easy?

Angelina Hadiputri:

Not at all. It is very intimidating in the beginning, especially as a person begins building their network. I was able to connect with many people through my work with Nice Shoes. That is where I began working as a compositor, and I learned many of the essential elements of my field in my early days, things that I continue to utilize in each project. At Nice Shoes, I collaborated with the VFX Supervisor and the head of CG on many different commercial projects. I was able to gain first-hand experience watching the best people do compositing. It was overly exciting, and I anticipated doing projects on my own. Soon, that happened.

NY Art Life:

That is great. It is important to start somewhere you can build a lifelong foundation of insight and experience. How did you adjust to being a compositor after such an intense experience at Nice Shoes?

Angelina Hadiputri:

It was difficult at first, as I began working as a compositor at Ingenuity Studios. The experience was incredible, as I worked on so many projects both big and small, where I was able to hone my compositing skills such as beauty, split screen, keying, color correction, and screen replacement. This was the turning point in my career as I began understanding how much I enjoy the process of compositing, and how essential it is to the experience of filmmaking and watching a film as well. During my time at Ingenuity Studios, I worked on “A Million Things Season 2,” “High Fidelity Season 1,” and much more. I enjoyed being a close part of series that meant so much, and I was amazed at how many people complete the filmmaking process.

NY Art Life:

That is true. What were some of the most meaningful experiences for you as a compositor?

Angelina Hadiputri:

There were a few projects that really stood out for me. In 2018, I worked on two thesis films, including “Potion Masters.” That was interesting as I got to work on the green screen composting using a particularly good program called “Nuke.” I used Nuke again on my next project which was a VFX Film called “Swift.” For that film, I used the program to do rotoscoping. That year made things really work, as I worked on three films the next year! I used Nuke for CG Compositing in two CG Thesis Films, one was “Unsurpassed Team” and the other was titled “Butera.” These two were truly the most meaningful to me. My last project was a VFX Thesis Film named “Game On.” I was able to work on that collaborating with Amy Tang. That film was a bit different as my role changed. I functioned as a director and took on the responsibility of Lighting and Compositing as well as directing. I enjoyed it very much.

NY Art Life:

That is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. What is something people should know about compositing?

Angelina Hadiputri:

That compositing is such an important aspect of filmmaking. It truly makes magical things happen and make the impossible become possible! It is a great field for people who want to be part of the detailed world of filmmaking. You will feel that you have had an essential role in that project. It is like making a dream come true. Creativity has no limits in this artistic field. It is one of the most beautiful jobs you could ever want to do, especially when you have a sparkling imagination.

NY Art Life:

Thank you very much for giving this interview. It is a real pleasure to share your experiences and talent with you. New York loves artists and their creativity. You are all the real engine or rather, the beating heart of this wonderful city. Thanks, from all the readers of New York Art Life.
